Ms Reynolds’ Baby Birds

This week Ms Reynolds shared an amazing story with her class – I thought I’d share it with everyone so here it is in her own words:

I know that if we were in school, I would really want to tell you a little story about what happened to me last night (Monday). 

At some point in the middle of the night, my dog started howling. We got up and turned on the light out the back to see what was wrong. It was pretty windy and a massive crows’ nest had fallen out of its tree and had landed beside Nanuk’s kennel. 

We looked closer and unfortunately discovered that there were two little chicks who did not survive the fall. We were about to go back inside when we heard something – we looked closer and discovered two more chicks that were alive but trapped in the nest because it had fallen upside down. 

So I got my gloves on and broke away some of the branches, rescued the two chicks and put them in a box with a towel and a hot water bottle. I had to hold them in my hands for a little while to get them warm. 

I did some research on-line and discovered that tiny chicks can be fed hard-boiled egg – so that’s what we have been doing since. We put a tiny piece of egg on a cocktail stick and when they open their mouths we pop it in.  They also take some water in a dropper. They have no feathers and only one has opened her eyes, so I don’t know if they will survive but myself and Alesha are doing our best and we will let Mother nature do the rest.

As I write this on Friday, the baby birds are still alive. I’ll let you know how it goes after the weekend.
